    Bio / His Notes: 
    A former child actor, George Sidney was a film director during the Golden Age of Hollywood film making (1927-1954). He spent the longest period of his career at Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer (MGM) in the 1930s. He also produced and directed films for Columbia Pictures and Paramount Pictures. He was a president of the Director's Guild of America and an avid photographer. He was the recipient of three awards (Oscars) from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.
    Summary: 
    Subjects include: Benny Goodman; a portrait of a young Ed Sullivan among the candid photographs; many others.
    Scope and Content: 
    Papers relating to George Sidney's career in film making and photography. The largest series is Series 1, which contains photographs by Sidney, in various sizes and formats, taken on film sets and in Hollywood homes, documenting the day-to-day activities involved in making a motion picture, including costume tests, screen tests, scouting for film locations, Hollywood parties, etc. Also included: scrapbooks documenting the vaudeville career of George Sidney's mother, the theater executive activities of Sidney's father Louis, and the career of his uncle (also named George Sidney), a well known comedian in Yiddish, in legitimate theater and later in films; business and personal papers, including correspondence, scripts, and the manuscript for Sidney's memoirs; and audiovisual materials.

    Divided into six series: Series, 1, Photographs, Photographic Negatives, and Slides, 1914-1996, and undated; Series 2, Production Ephemera, Posters, Scripts, 1943-1999 and undated; Series 3, Office Files and Personal Material, 1903-2002, and undated; Music Manuscripts, Sheet Music, and Music Related Material, 1885-1992, and undated; Series 5, Audio-Visual, 1933-2001, and undated; Series 6, George Sidney, (1877-1945), 1909-1945, and undated.
    Provenance: 
    Donated to the Archives Center in 2004 by Sidney's widow, Corinne Sidney.

    Loc. of Assoc. Material: 
    The bound scripts from Sidney's films are housed in the Division of Culture and the Arts, National Museum of American History. There are scrapbooks donated by the Sidney estate in the collection of the CInema-Television Library, Doheny Library, Univesity of Southern California, consisting of eleven volumes containing photographs, correspondence, publicity documents, and other materials, ca. 1933-1963.

    Restrictions: 
    Unrestricted research access on site by appointment. Unprotected photographs must be handled with gloves. Reserachers must use reference copies of audio-visual materials. Viewing film portions of the collection requires special appointment, listening to LP recordings is possible only be special arrangement. Using negatives requires a three hour waiting period.
