    Phy. Description:
    5.6 linear meters.
    Bio / His Notes:
Esther Richards Applin (1895-1972), a micropaleontologist, was educated at the University of California at Berkeley. She pioneered in the use of microfossils to determine stratigraphic correlation. This new approach was an important breakthrough for the oil exploration industry. Applin's work was done primarily in California, Mexico, South Dakota, and the southeastern and western coasts of the Gulf of Mexico.
In 1919 she joined the Rio Bravo Oil Company as a paleontologistwhile also being retained by the East Coast Oil Company, Texas Company, and Gulf Oil Company. From 1927 to 1942 Applin was a consulting paleontologist and subsurface geologist in Ft. Worth, Texas. Later, from 1942 to 1945, she was an Assistant Professor of Geology at the University of Texas and consulting paleontologist for the Sun Oil Company. From 1944 to 1962 Applin was a geologist with the United States Geological Survey (USGS). Together with her husband, Paul L. Applin (1891- ), also a USGS geologist, she studied regional stratigraphy based on micropaleontology.
This collection consists of lithic and final determinations for cores and cuttings of wells and correspondence concerning geologic parameters in the wells; general correspondence of Esther and Paul Applin; series files consisting of descriptions, depth readings, and photographs; miscellaneous files including correspondence, charts, plates, photographs, and reports; geophysical logs, including partial or complete lithologic descriptions and faunal occurrences, reports, and correspondence; plotted strip logs containing descriptions of rocks and wells; and electric logs showing geophysical properties of rocks. NOTE: These papers are located in the National Museum of Natural History, Division of Invertebrate Paleontology.
    (1) Lithic and final determinations of wells, circa 1938-1960; (2) general correspondence, 1926-1968; (3) series files, circa 1949-1961 and undated; (4) miscellaneous files, circa 1935-1964 and undated; (5) geophysical plotted strip and electric logs, circa 1923-1964.
