    Bio / His Notes: 
    Harry C. Ellis was an American photographer in Paris (circa 1898-1927) who worked under the moniker "American Flashlight Photographer." Some of his photographs were commissioned by the National Geographic Society, and many of them depict artists of the time, including Auguste Rodin and Loie Fuller.
    Summary: 
    Photographs documenting Herbert Ward's studio, collection of African artifacts, and his bronze sculptures of African subjects. The photographs are in an album titled "L'atelier de Herbert Ward, Paris," with the inscription "To Thomas Nelson Paye with Herbert's love. Paris, 1911."

    Text on album in French, with handwriting in English.
    Provenance: 
    Photographs possibly donated by Sarita Ward to Department of Anthropology, Smithsonian Institution, with Ward's African collection. Transferred to National Anthropological Archives, 1975.
    Loc. of Assoc. Material: 
    Ward's collection of bronzes and artifacts, depicted in the photographs in this collection, can be found in the Department of Anthropology, Smithsonian Institution, in accession 067312.
    A pamphlet on the Herbert Ward African Collection can be found in the National Anthropological Archives reference files.
